How to Choose the Right Leather Thickness for Wallets, Watch Straps and Small Leather Goods
By Russo Leather · Reading time: 5 minutes
If you've ever ordered leather only to find it's too stiff for a bifold wallet or too thin to hold its shape as a watch strap, you'll know how frustrating it is to get thickness wrong. It's one of the most common mistakes among artisans — and one of the easiest to avoid once you understand the basics.
At Russo Leather, every panel we supply is available from 0.8mm to 2.5mm in 0.1mm increments, specifically because we know that a tenth of a millimetre can make the difference between a product that sells and one that doesn't. Here's how to choose the right thickness for the most popular small leather goods.
Why thickness matters more than you think
Leather thickness affects everything: how cleanly it skives, how crisply it folds, how well edges burnish, and how the finished product feels in the hand. Too thick and your wallet bulges at the spine. Too thin and your watch strap lacks the firmness that gives it a premium feel.
For printed vegetable tanned leather in particular — where the surface coating and the grain are part of the product's visual identity — getting the thickness right ensures that the design sits beautifully on the finished piece without cracking at folds or lifting at edges.
Recommended thickness by product
Bifold and trifold wallets
Recommended: 0.8mm – 1.0mm
Wallets need to fold cleanly and stay slim in a pocket. At 0.8mm your leather will fold without resistance and layer without bulk. If you're lining a wallet with a second layer of leather, 0.8mm on both layers gives you a combined thickness that still feels refined rather than chunky. 1.0mm works well for the outer panels if you want a slightly more structured feel.
Card holders and slim cardholders
Recommended: 0.8mm – 0.9mm
The thinner end of the range is your friend here. Card holders are all about precision — tight pockets, clean edges, minimal bulk. At 0.8mm the leather is easy to skive at edges, burnishes beautifully, and folds without cracking. Our vachetta leather at this thickness is particularly well suited because of its specific oils and excellent fibre dispersion.
Watch straps
Recommended: 1.2mm – 1.8mm
Watch straps need body. Too thin and the strap feels flimsy on the wrist; too thick and it won't pass through the spring bars or buckle loop comfortably. For a single-layer strap, 1.5mm is the most popular choice — firm enough to hold its shape, flexible enough to wrap the wrist naturally. If you're laminating two layers, 0.8mm + 0.8mm gives you a combined 1.6mm with a clean, flat finish.
Key fobs and small accessories
Recommended: 1.0mm – 1.5mm
Key fobs take daily abuse — folding, pressing, being thrown in bags. A thickness of 1.2mm to 1.5mm gives you the durability to handle this while still being workable with hand tools. Edges finish beautifully at this weight with minimal effort.
Notebook covers and journal wraps
Recommended: 1.5mm – 2.0mm
Notebook covers need structure. At 1.5mm your cover will hold its shape on a shelf and develop a beautiful patina over time without feeling rigid. 2.0mm gives you a more premium, architectural feel — particularly effective with our Commodore and Carrara collections where the linear print adds visual weight that the leather thickness should match.
Belt loops, bag handles and straps
Recommended: 2.0mm – 2.5mm
For anything load-bearing, go thicker. Bag handles and belt loops are subject to constant tension and need the structural integrity that 2.0mm to 2.5mm provides. At this weight, edges take longer to burnish but the result is a polished, professional finish that signals quality instantly.
A note on skiving
One of the questions we get most often is: "Can I skive this leather myself without a splitting machine?"
Yes — and it's one of the reasons we designed our leather specifically with artisans in mind. Our vegetable tanned vachetta leather from Tuscany has a medium-firm temper and excellent fibre dispersion, which means it skives cleanly with a sharp knife even at 2.0mm. You don't need industrial equipment. A good Japanese skiving knife and a firm cutting surface is enough to thin your edges and transition between thicknesses on folded pieces.
Ordering tip: use A4 panels to test before committing
If you're trying a new thickness for a new product, our A4 precut panels are the ideal way to test without over-investing. A4 gives you enough leather to prototype two or three wallets or four to five watch straps, letting you confirm the thickness works for your specific construction before ordering A3.
Because we keep all thicknesses in stock at all times, you can reorder the exact same specification the moment you receive a client order — no waiting, no minimum commitment beyond a single panel.
